It is birthday month! I haven't made a cake from scratch in forever, and I found a recipe I wanted to try. I had a friend coming over for lunch, so it seemed like a good opportunity to try it out.
It smelled very good!
I trimmed it and cut it into layers. I made coffee buttercream.
Again...I had to do quality control, so I used the trimmed pieces and leftover frosting. YUM!
So...now...I have leftover cake in the fridge for my birthday! Happy Birthday to me!

Yuck!
The front porch is not used much, but I try to make it look festive. Lately, the spiders have taken over! I sprayed everything down yesterday and got the hibbie-gibbies. I am trying to psych myself up to go sweep it all and then clean it good.
I know spiders take care of other insects, but this is a little excessive!

Well, he did it!
Ted and Teddy have been shopping! They searched high and low and found a good deal...a really, really good deal. I know it was an extra special blessing from the Lord!
They went on Thursday night to pick it up. They were so excited!
Teddy is already a pro at operating it. They already have a job they are going to do on Saturday.
Ted came home Friday and played with his new toy.
We used it to get the nasty, ruined coffee table off the deck.
That felt good to get that mess off the deck...easily! "Oh, we will find so many jobs to do now and they will be easy with this tractor!"

The lasts of the garden
I was hopeful as I pulled off some medium/small sized cobs to bring to the kitchen...and then immediately regretted that decision as little black bugs began to crawl all over the counter!
Sooooo sad! Every cob was infested with these little guys and parts were starting to rot.
There were well developed parts and then some not so good parts. I am not sure what can be done for next year...I have some reading to do and some questions to ask of those more experienced. I pulled down the cornstalks yesterday to let more sun in on the tomatoes and potatoes. We shall see if we get some more produce there.

Keeping things lively!
Oakley is our toddler! Always causing messes and getting into things. She has toys spread out all over the house, but yet goes after the shoes, my face, Ted's feet, towels, rugs, clean laundry, toilet paper rolls, and ice cubes. She did manage to do the llama in after all the years Chica and Velle played with it. Oakley chewed the plastic eyeballs off and pulled stuffing out. We had a moment of reflection before I put the llama in the garbage. Puppies are not smart enough to NOT eat the plastic parts and the synthetic stuffing.
Sunday night, I was trying to have a chat with her about behaving for the groomer. This was her response...growling and trying to bite my fingers.
We went Monday morning to meet the groomer at the vet. We were there for a half hour and Oakley came out all pretty.
No drugs were used. She did not fight the gal who held her. She did yip once when they got to her toe nails. We have a plan to go every couple weeks to hang out with Mrs. Beckie and get used to her house with all the sights and sounds. "Mom will leave to go to her Bible study and we will be friends!" I appreciate her help and advice. And now that she has figured out how to get up on the couch...a whole new world has opened up to her!
Ted left work a little early and we went to Yoders on Monday. The kitchen was closed for the sandwiches we wanted. New hours...they now close at 5pm! We got to get the deli style sandwiches, fresh chips, and a Buckeye to split. We came home and spent time in the pool and then had our picnic lunch/supper at the dining room table. It was yummy!
It was so hot and I didn't feel like baking. I made no-bake cookies for our last ESL class on Tuesday.
Tuesday, Ted and I left early to head to the plant and get set up. He had executives coming in again and I had class. The time to start came and went...no students. Ted went to see what was going on...there was a mandatory meeting...and the HR manager and trainer neglected to inform me. Bummer! I was more annoyed to lose our last class than getting up early. I made my way back home and fed the dogs breakfast. I caught up on a couple other things and then headed to our first Bible study for the season.
So this morning...we rested in the thought that He holds all things in our life in His almighty hands. The sun is shining as we look ahead to the weekend. But first, we will enjoy coffee, time with God, and puppy snuggles.

It was such a blessing to be back together and catch up after being off for the summer. It was the adult version of the first day of school! The music and the teaching touched my heart.
Our table has gone beyond the Tuesday morning to make time to do lunch together every once in awhile...and we did it this week. To sit around the table and hear the testimonies of these gals was so encouraging. God is at work in the messy and hard times of life...in my life...in her life...here and there...near or far...all at the same time! The care of ladies who are at various life stages ministers in a special way! God knew I needed this to bolster me through the week. When we sit with others, we learn to not focus on our life and problems. When we sit under the teaching of God's Word, we learn how to do life and expect problems. When we are honest...that life is messy and life is hard...we see that others are covered with the messy and hard too...and we can cry together, pray together, and laugh together. I am thankful for this season of life. This little oak branch fell during Wednesday's storm. I picked it up yesterday and snapped a picture. We won't always have sunny, beautiful days. There will be storms...it will get rough and loud...but we need the rain and nitrogen from the lightning...because it promotes growth and prepares us for the next season. So this morning...we rested in the thought that He holds all things in our life in His almighty hands. The sun is shining as we look ahead to the weekend. But first, we will enjoy coffee, time with God, and puppy snuggles.
Gardening in 2026
Picking beans while the thunder rolls in the distance and getting mosquito bites as the sweat rolls into my eyes. It is nice we have a pool to cool off in after picking a mess of beans! I saved some to eat and blanched the rest in order to freeze.
I felt tears well up in my eyes as I sealed the bags for the freezer. I think Mom would be proud of our efforts this year! I wanted so bad to talk to her about all things gardening. Instead...God sent people across my path to share their wisdom and advice...and so I am thankful...for God's provision. We didn't get an over-abundance...but enough to enjoy and share a little bit.
For next year...more space between rows and train cucumbers to go up something! They are weaving all over the beans and marigold/zinnia border.
I love the happy pops of color!
Corn...we need the ears to get bigger! The tomatoes are giving some fruit here and there! They liked the epsom salt and natural fertilizer I mixed up.
I LOVE the sunflowers! I can almost see them from the house. I will be saving seeds for next year...and there will be lots of them on our property!
Oh dear! This is what happens when the vines wander and I miss the small cukes! These were huge and white because they were under the marigold and zinnia plants. We don't have the chickens or turkeys yet, so I put them into the compost pile.
Thursday morning I went to the garden to see what came after all the rain. My basket was full! I put together a little happy bouquet to take to a new friend beginning to go through a breast cancer journey.
I re-potted plants...inside...during a loud thunderstorm. I jumped at one big crack and spilled. What a mess! I should have waited and done it outside at another time.
To be honest...I am getting tired of dealing with cucumbers! I took all the small and medium ones and made one last jar of whole pickles. The others are for...I am not sure. I am thinking, I will not need to plant cucumbers next year.
Another mess of beans...
Some for supper and some for the freezer!
The dogs like fresh green beans too!

Thursday
It was a foggy and cloudy drive to the plant!
Signing some completion certificates...I counted up all the words on the boards...over 1000 words in English with all the variations and crazy rules of English! I'd say they deserve a reminder of what they worked through for 12 weeks.
Saving all the flowers from the bouquets I bring indoors...we shall have lots of flowers again next season!
A new month...a new look for the table.
The garden...completely bordered by marigolds and zinnias. They are just about to pop with color!
I understand why people plant early and have said we are late. The summer heat gets intense some days. BUT we have had good rains and everything is lush and green!
Finally...the green beans are coming in!
I picked while it thundered and sprinkled. Then I jumped in the pool to cool off!
Another two squash, one tomato, several cucumbers...
and a mess of green beans!

Ted and I went and voted for the first time in Tennessee! Guess what?! In the elementary school in the country town of Whitesburg, we had to show our id! It wasn't hard...prove who you say you are...sign the book. What is more concerning? The computerized voting machines. EEK! First time we used those and knowing what little bit about technology like we do...did not make us impressed. Give me an old fashioned pen and paper.
